The 10 Commandments where given to Israel 50 days after the exodus from Mitzraim (Egypt). The first two where given verbaly by Hashem
and the rest where dictaded by Moshe Rabenu (Moses). (Exodus (Shemot) 20:2)
At the moment of Matan Torah (the giving of the Ten Commandments), The people were not in their normal state of being. As we know from
the book of Jitro (Exodus (Shemot) 18:1), The people had to prepare themselves for 3 days. But the preperation started long before this.
There where actualy 49 days of preperation. These days we call "The counting of the Omer". There are 50 gates of understanding, and it
is said that Moshe Rabenu (Moses) had the 50th gate. We on the other hand, only reached 49... One day at a time.
Then came Matan Torah, and we were all to the point where... "The people could see the sounds..." (Exodus (Shemot) 20:15). They
no longer heard the sounds, but they saw the sounds. This is a very high state of mind.
The soul does not need ears, eyes, nose, or tongue. However, while the soul is trapped within the body, the only way for the earth to
communicate with the soul is through the earthly body. Therefore, our senses are each directed to a bodily organ. However, when the
soul is free of the body, it does not need these organs in order to understand the senses. Sound, as in our pasuk (paragraph),
did not travel into their ears, but rather, because of their state of mind, it traveled directly into the soul, where thought, sound, and site
are all understood as one.
This may also explain the rapid fall of Israel right after Matan Torah. It is a known fact that when we climb high, we fall much further and
much quicker back to earth, than if we had not climbed at all. After Moshe Rabenu (Moses) returned with the tablets... After the verbal
giving of the Torah, Israel had 40 days to come back down from that high state of mind, and when they did, the really crashed. They thought
that Moshe had left them, they felt abandoned and alone, and they started to act as did the evil nations of the world. With wicked parties
and dance. They had dropped so low that they even made a golden calf and named it as their representitive of Hashem.
It is interesting to note that the Commandments 1 - 5 are parallel to the Commandments 6 - 10
Lets look at them above.
Commandment 1. I am Hashem your G-d is parallel with 6. You shall not kill. Because when a person
kills another, it is as if he was killing Hashem Himself.
Commandment 2. There shall not be unto you the gods of others before me is parallel with 7. You shall not commit adultry. Because if you are
wed to Hashem, you should not go with another.
Commandment 3. You shall not take the Name of Hashem, you God, in vain is parallel with 8. You shall not steal. Because using the Name of Hashem
without permission is as if you are stealing.
Commandment 4. Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it is parallel with 9. You shall not bear false witness. Because when one denies that the world
was created in 6 days, one also denies Torah, and that is as if he is bearing false witness.
Commandment 5. Honor your father and your mother is parallel with 10. You shall not covet. Because when one does not honor ones own parents, he searches
to honor another's.
