Helpful tips when learning Chumash
(And what to expect, what's it good for? etc...)

Bamidbar: 3: 1
These are the offspring of Aaron and Moses on the day Hashem spoke with Moses at Mount Sinai,
Rashi on 3: 1 These are the offspring of Aaron and Moses:

It mentions non-but the sons of Aaron, yet they are called "offspring of Moses," because he taught them Torah. It teaches us that whoever teaches his friend's son Torah Scripture views him as if he had fathered him.

Rashi on 3: 1 On the day Hashem spoke with Moses:

These sons of Aaron became Moses' offspring, because he taught them what he had learned from the mouth of the Almighty.

Bamidbar: 3: 4
Nadab and Abihu died before Hashem when they offered an alien fire before Hashem in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children, but Elazar and Ithamar ministered in the presence of Aaron, their father,

Rashi on 3: 4 In the presence of Aaron, their father:

During his lifetime.

Bamidbar: 3: 6
"Bring near the tribe of Levi and have it stand before Aaron the Kohen, and they shall serve him.
Rashi on 3: 6 And they shall serve him:

And what is this service, the following verse, "And they shall safeguard his charge." Because guarding the Sanctuary is a duty which falls upon Aaron, that an alien shall not approach it, as it says, "Hashem said to Aaron, you, your sons, your father's house with you, shall bear the iniquity of the Sanctuary." And the these Levites assist the Kohanim. This is this service.

Bamidbar: 3: 7
And they shall safeguard his charge and the charge of the entire assembly before the Tent of Meeting, to perform the service of the Tabernacle.
Rashi on 3: 7 And they shall safeguard his charge:

Any appointment to which a person is appointed, and which it is his duty to carry out, is called, "charge, assignment," throughout Scripture, and in the language of the Mishnah, as they said with regard to Bigthan and Teresh, "But my assignment and your assignment are not the same."

Bamidbar: 3: 8
They shall safeguard all the utensils of the Tent of Meeting and the charge of the children of Israel, to perform the service of the Tabernacle.
Rashi on 3: 8 And the charge of the children of Israel:

For they were all charge with tending to the needs of the Sanctuary, but the Levites came in their stead, through the Israelites' agency. Therefore, the Levites take from the Israelites the tithes as the payment, as it says, "For it is a wage for you in exchange for your service."

Bamidbar: 3: 9
You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons, given, given are they to him from the children of Israel.
Rashi on 3: 9 Given are they to him:

For assistance

Rashi on 3: 9 From the children of Israel:

This has the same meaning as "from 'among' the children of Israel," as if to say, out of the rest of the assembly, they have been separated for this, by decree of the Omnipresent, and He gave them to Aaron, as it says, "Then I gave over the Levites to be presented etc."

Bamidbar: 3: 10
You shall appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall safeguard their priesthood, and the alien who approaches will die."
Rashi on 3: 10 You shall appoint Aaron and his sons:

This is an expression of "appointing," and is not expression of "counting." [Rashi explains the use of the specific Hebrew word].

Rashi on 3: 10 And they shall safeguard their priesthood:

This alludes to, receiving the blood of animals slaughtered for offerings, and throwing it onto the Altar, and setting the specified parts for smoking, and other services given over to the Kohanim.

Bamidbar: 3: 12
"And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel, in place of every firstborn, the first issue of every womb among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.
Rashi on 3: 12 And I, behold, I have taken:

"And I," whence did I acquire the Levites as Mine "from among the children of Israel," that Israel should hire them for My service? Through the firstborn did I acquire them, and I took the Levites in exchange for the firstborn. For the service had been performed by the firstborn, but when they sinned with the Golden Calf, they were disqualified. And the Levites, who did not participate in idol-worship, were chosen instead of them.
