Bresheet 3:1
Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field that Hashem God had made. He said to the woman, "Did, perhaps, God say, You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?"
|
Rashi on 3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning.:
What is this matter to here? It should have juxtaposed "And He made Adam and his wife garments of skin and He clothed them [Verse 21 because the preceding verse mentions that they were naked.].
But, it has taught you out of what notion the snake jumped, he saw them naked and engaging in relations, visible to all, and he desired her. [The snake wished for Adam to eat of the tree and die so
that he could be with Chava (Eve)].
More cunning than any: In accordance with his cunning and his greatness was his downfall, he is called "more cunning than all," and later, "more cursed than all" [verse 14].
Did God say...: Perhaps He said to you, "You shall not eat of any tree...?" Even though he saw them eating from other fruits, he increased word
upon her so that she should answer him and he would come to speak of that tree.
|
Bresheet 3:3
Of the fruit of the tree which is in the center of the garden God has said, "You shall not eat of it and you shall not touch it, lest you die."
|
Rashi on 3:3 And you shall not tourch it:
She added to the commandment therefore she came to detraction. This is that which it says "Do not add to His words." [Hashem never said "do not touch it" there was not a prohibition against touch, only consumption].
|
Bresheet 3:4
The serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die,
|
Rashi on 3:4 You will not surely die:
He pushed her until she touched the tree. He said to her, "Just as there is no death through touching it, so there is no death through eating it. [This explains the rational of the cunning snake].
|
Bresheet 3:5
For God knows that on the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and bad."
|
Rashi on 3:5 For God knows:
"Every craftsman hates others of his craft, God ate from the tree and created the world."
[Again, this explains the cunning rational of the snake. According to the snake, Hashem did not want them to know the great secrets of His creation and then become
His rivals.]
And you will be like God: creator of worlds
