This icon and its applicable blessing are deep rooted within the mysticism of Torah and Kabbalah. It is a protector against the Evil Eye.  What exactly is the Evil eye? We as People, being a vessel of the creative energy, have within us an abundance of life force. Most of us are oblivious to this being that we are so focused on ourselves and our own problems and our own worlds. However, man is nothing other than the force of life wrapped neatly within a body. Thus, when someone becomes jealous of your success, or thinks harm against you or even has the slightest negative thought, this energy projects upon your energy.
